Both intensive and extensive roofing options need to have their drainage and maintenance needs considered from the very beginning. Extensive roofs (typically found on residential homes) do not usually require as much maintenance, but there will be a need for some, so it is important to have a way to access the roof for those times. Intensive roofs usually have some type of walkway that makes it easy to access the roof itself and the plants on the roof. If either roof has a steep slant, considering installing a railing to help anyone walking on the roof keep his balance and prevent sliding or falling toward the edge.
Depending on the types of plants you install on your green roof, you may need a more complex drainage system. There needs to be adequate water retained in the planting medium and the drainage layer to stop plants from drying out, thus turning your roof brown. However, too much water can lead to oversaturation of plant roots and pooling, which can also have adverse effects.
You need to consider the right system for your climate to ensure that your green roof will not get over or under watered throughout the year. Your green roofing company should be able to help you make these decisions.
