Extensive Roofing Option

by on January 31, 2012

When it comes to “green” roofing, there are two options: extensive and intensive. Extensive roofing is commonly found on houses that are home to single families and multifamily residential dwellings instead of commercial properties. These types of roofs need to have as little foot traffic as possible, unlike commercial buildings where visits to the rooftop may be more frequent for reasons other than basic maintenance.

Extensive roofing is usually very easy to install and can be easily added to an existing roof; however, it is important to keep in mind that extensive roofing will add an additional 10 to 35 pounds per square foot to your roof’s weight, so you may want to make sure the foundation and structure can take on this additional pressure.

The plants used on extensive roofing range from 1.6 to 6 inches in depth. Drought-tolerant plants and grasses are the most common plants used because they require little water; however, it is not uncommon for the rooftop to turn brown when rain is sparse. Once rainfall occurs, the plants will return to their normal green color.

If you think an extensive roof is ideal for your home, contact your local roofing company and find out more about becoming green with your roof.
