Choosing A Quality Roofing Contractor

Choosing A Quality Roofing Contractor

A recently conducted survey by the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) identified the top ten consumer complaints. Home Improvement and Construction has remained number two over six years, second to the Auto Industry. Most complaints within the home improvement industry are focused on bad work and failure to start or complete the job. Also, National Magazine conducted a survey and the results were astonishing. 45% of people surveyed would not recommend the contractor they used to a friend.

When choosing your roofing contractor, make sure they are able to provide you with all of the following items. First, make sure that they are a licensed contractor. If an unlicensed roofing contractor gets hurt on your property they could sue – and win! Unlicensed contractors are unlikely to carry proper insurance, so it can happen to you. Consumer reports show that unlicensed contractors do shoddy work and in some cases don’t even finish the project at all! Licenses are generally required for any project that affects the structural integrity of a home.

Generally any roofing company that gets listed with consumer choice awards are great contractors to work with. The Better Business Bureau is also a great place to evaluate roofing companies.  Also, any good roofing contractor is affiliated with a roofing contractors association. If a roofing company is not affiliated with any associations, that is a great indicator of an unlicensed, uninsured or inexperienced contractor. Your local chamber of commerce is another great place to look for an experienced roofing contractor.

Your contractor should be knowledgeable about the many different products and roofing materials that are available for your home. Your contractor should be able to answer any questions you might have at the initial appointment. Be sure that you feel comfortable with your decision after selecting your roofing contractor. After all, do you really want a company you’re not comfortable with working on your biggest investment – your home? Remember, the sales person you talked to may have been a nice person but what about the people who you will be dealing with regarding the work and any concerns you may have. A good way to know is talking with your cities building inspector.
